OpenRS technical session: ORS-Appliance and KI Console

This is not a formal product launch or a polished conference talk. It is a technical community session: part progress update, part prototype walkthrough, and part invitation for technically minded OpenRS participants to shape what comes next.

Richard opened the session by setting out three themes for the current work: making OpenRS more inclusive, making the product set easier to use, and improving the support and documentation around it. The practical thread running through those themes is lower-friction participation. Libraries should be able to try new capabilities, give feedback, and find a route into the network without every local system first needing a full direct DCB adapter.

The main demo focuses on ORS-Appliance as that route into OpenRS. The session shows a new appliance tenant being provisioned through KI Console, linked to supporting services, and given its own staff-facing service. From there it walks through SFTP-based MARC upload, record intake, MARC-to-Bibframe conversion, location policy configuration, and the information an appliance needs before it can join a DCB network.

There is also a useful look at the two sides of the appliance boundary. Towards DCB, ORS-Appliance exposes the NCIP and OAI endpoints needed for the wider network to coordinate circulation and harvest records. Towards more traditional interlibrary loan, it can also support ISO 18626-style request flows. That is the important architectural point: ORS-Appliance is not just a thin client for one hub, but a library-side point of presence for several resource-sharing routes.

The final part of the discussion moves into KI Console itself. The aim is to make OpenRS services easier to stand up for trials, technical review, and eventually production use, without making a particular hosting provider or deployment environment a hidden dependency. The session touches on Kubernetes and Docker-based deployment, SFTPGo, frontend bootloading, version selection, and why a more opinionated orchestration layer can reduce the amount of local assembly required to try ORS-Appliance, DocDel, FOLIO modules, or related services.
